First Boarding Bridge: A Sign of the Next Era | Dušan Novota on Record Profitability, Terminal Upgrades, and the Future of BTS

27/07/2026

Bratislava Airport is entering a new chapter, recording its strongest financial performance in 17 years with a net profit of EUR 3.6 million and claiming the spot as Europe’s fastest-growing medium-sized airport. From the imminent installation of its first-ever passenger boarding bridge to comprehensive non-Schengen upgrades, Dušan Novota, CEO of Bratislava Airport, outlines how strategic diversification, digital innovation, and strict cost discipline are building the foundation for the airport’s next era.

Andrzej Gniadkowski: With the summer rush starting a few weeks ago, what is the biggest operational challenge you are focused on right now?

Dušan Novota
CEO of Bratislava Airport

Dušan Novota: Bratislava Airport is currently the fastest-growing medium-sized airport in Europe in terms of year-on-year passenger growth, according to ACI EUROPE statistics. We are experiencing the strongest year in the airport’s history, with record-breaking passenger volumes and flight movements.

Our primary operational challenge this summer is to successfully accommodate this exceptional growth while maintaining the highest standards of operational safety, regulatory compliance, and service quality. At the same time, we must continue to meet the operational and service level commitments agreed with our airline partners, while ensuring a smooth and positive passenger experience throughout the peak season.

We are experiencing the strongest year in the airport’s history, accommodating record-breaking growth without compromising on safety or service quality.

AG: BTS is seeing record growth, but as ACI Europe warns, traffic alone no longer guarantees financial sustainability. How are you translating these rising passenger volumes into long-term financial stability for the airport?

DN: Traffic growth alone is not enough to ensure long-term financial sustainability. Our strategy is to convert passenger growth into a balanced and resilient business model. In 2025, Bratislava Airport delivered its strongest financial performance in 17 years, reporting a net profit of EUR 3.6 million and achieving profitability for the second consecutive year.

This has been driven not only by higher aeronautical revenues resulting from increased traffic, but also by the continued expansion of our non-aeronautical business, including retail, parking, commercial property, and other airport services. Diversifying our revenue streams while maintaining strict cost discipline is essential to ensuring the airport’s long-term financial stability and supporting future investments.

What are the most recent updates to the passenger terminal, and what new facilities or services are you planning to open soon?

Passenger experience has become one of our key strategic priorities. Ahead of the summer peak, we introduced a wide range of new services and operational improvements designed to make travelling through Bratislava Airport faster, more convenient, and more comfortable. These include self-service bag drop for Ryanair passengers, expanded Fast Track access, enhanced border control capacity, new retail and food & beverage concepts, upgraded passenger facilities, and improved ground transport connections.

At the same time, we continue investing in airport infrastructure and operational efficiency. Looking ahead, we will continue investing in the airport’s development, with plans including the reconstruction of the non-Schengen departures terminal, the expansion of parking capacity, and the installation of our first passenger boarding bridge in the near future.

We are bridging into a new era of passenger experience with terminal reconstructions and the upcoming installation of our first passenger boarding bridge.

How are you positioning Bratislava Airport to strengthen its role as a key regional gateway for Central Europe?

Bratislava Airport has a unique strategic advantage. We are located at the heart of Central Europe, within easy reach of several neighbouring markets, which gives us significant growth potential.

Our strategy is based on three pillars: expanding air connectivity, strengthening partnerships with airlines, and continuously investing in airport infrastructure and passenger experience. We want Bratislava to be recognised not only as Slovakia’s largest international airport, but also as one of the region’s most efficient and fastest-growing gateways, supporting tourism, business, and the wider economy.

In a time of rising industry costs, what steps are you taking to ensure the airport remains both competitive and efficient?

In today’s environment, airports must be both efficient and resilient. Our focus is on optimising operations, embracing digital solutions, investing in modern infrastructure, and diversifying our revenue base.

We are careful with every euro we spend, but we also recognise that targeted investments in technology and operational capability ultimately reduce costs, improve efficiency, and enhance the passenger experience. That is how we ensure Bratislava Airport remains competitive over the long term.

We scrutinize every euro spent, knowing that targeted digital and operational investments ultimately drive down costs and elevate competitiveness.
